David M. Cordani, President and CEO, will proudly accept this year’s
Star of Hope Award on behalf of the CIGNA global team and in honor
of CIGNA's long-standing commitment to supporting JDRF’s mission
to find a cure for diabetes.
David M. Cordani was named president and Chief Executive Officer
of CIGNA Corporation in December 2009. He had been president and
Chief Operating Officer since June 2008. Cordani leads a team of
executives responsible for integrating company operations and leveraging
CIGNA's global presence to fulfill customer needs in the most seamless,
effective, and efficient manner.
Cordani is recognized for having stepped forward with the industry-leading
position on health improvement as the only sustainable solution
for the future, with a focus on health, well-being, and sense of
security for the individuals the company serves. He extends that
leadership perspective across the globe, focusing on the customer
experience and enhancing the health, productivity, and performance
of individuals and corporate clients.
At a pivotal time in CIGNA's 200-year history, with the public spotlight
on U.S. health care and global employers finding their benefits
programs to be a challenge to competitiveness, he has set the goal
to move from a traditional insurance company to the leading global
health service company. More than semantics, the shift in focus
is a fundamental break with the past. Supporting individuals with
the resources to manage their health, CIGNA is acting to keep people
healthy and to identify and help the people at risk of losing their
health insurance, while still providing for those chronically or
acutely ill. CIGNA also helps individuals around the world maintain
their sense of security and gain peace of mind through its financial
health products.
Cordani's passion for health and well-being extends into his personal
life, charitable and community activities. A competitive tri-athlete
in his down time, he is also actively involved with the Multiple
Sclerosis Society, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, and
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Annually CIGNA undertakes
the CIGNA Health Awareness Tour to generate awareness and educate
employees, customers, and communities across the United States about
health and healthy lifestyles - Cordani is an active participant
each year.
Cordani was previously president of CIGNA HealthCare, a position
he held since July 2005. Before that he held the positions of President
of Health Segments for CIGNA HealthCare, responsible for the company's
distribution, marketing, and underwriting for all customer segments;
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of CIGNA HealthCare;
Controller for CIGNA Corporation; and President of CIGNA HealthCare's
Southeast Region. Prior to CIGNA, Cordani was with Coopers &
Lybrand.
Cordani was elected to the CIGNA Board of Directors in October
2009. He serves on Boards of Directors for the National Association
of Manufacturers, the Connecticut Business and Industry Association,
and the CIGNA Foundation. He is a graduate of Texas A&M (B.S.,
1988) and the University of Hartford (M.B.A. in Marketing, 1994),
and is a Chartered Financial Consultant.
